π Overview
The Services by Category report shows individual ledger charge transactions for services, organized by the service category assigned to each service in ChiroHD. It is the category-level version of the By Service / Inventory Item report β instead of filtering to a specific service or item by name, you filter by the broader category that service belongs to (such as Chiropractic, Massage, or Rehab).
This report is found under the Sales Reports section in All Reports Beta. It is designed for offices that want to see patient-level charge activity grouped or filtered by the type of service performed, rather than by an individual service name.
To access this report, go to Reporting > All Reports Beta, select a location, and click Services by Category under the Sales Reports section.
π‘ How This Report Relates to Other Reports
Understanding where this report fits helps you choose the right tool:

π·οΈ Service Categories in ChiroHD
Service categories are assigned to each service when it is set up in ChiroHD. They are fixed categories defined by ChiroHD β not customizable by individual offices. The available service categories are:
New Patient
Chiropractic
Exam
Massage
Nutrition
Stretch
Laser
Red Light Therapy
Acupuncture
Rehab
Weight Loss
Neuropathy
Mental Health
Decompression
Shockwave
Note: A service will only appear in this report under the category it was assigned when it was created. If a service is assigned to the wrong category, the transactions for that service will appear under the incorrect category in this report. Category assignments are managed in your service settings.

π Filter Details
π Charged Between / And (Required)
Sets the date window for the report. Includes any service charge added to a patient's ledger within this range, keyed off the charge date β not the appointment date or payment date.
π Sort By and Sort Direction (Required)
You can sort the output by:
Date β chronological order by charge date (default, newest first)
First Name β alphabetical by patient first name
Last Name β alphabetical by patient last name
Category β grouped alphabetically by service category
Tip: Sorting by Category is particularly useful when you run the report without a category filter β it groups all transactions under their respective category so you can review each category's activity together rather than interleaved by date.
Sort direction defaults to descending. Change to ascending for oldest-to-newest or AβZ ordering.
π·οΈ Service Category (Optional)
If left blank, the report returns transactions for all service categories within the date range. Select one or more categories to narrow the report to only those charges.
Example: To see all Chiropractic and Rehab charges in the last month, select both Chiropractic and Rehab from the category filter and run the report.
π€ Billing Provider (Optional)
Filter the report to charges attributed to a specific billing provider. If left blank, charges from all providers are included.
π What the Report Shows
For each transaction line, the report shows:
Patient name
The service charged and its category
The charge date
The charge amount
The report includes a running total so you can see aggregate amounts as you work through the output.
β οΈ Important limitation: Like the Sales Report and By Service / Inventory Item report, this report shows the default billed amount for each charge. Inline write-offs β discounts applied at the service level at the time of charge β are not reflected. The report shows gross billed amounts only.
β οΈ What This Report Does Not Show
Inline write-offs β service-level discounts applied at the time of charge are not included. The report shows the original default price only.
Inventory items β this report covers services only. For inventory item transactions by category, use the Inventory by Category report.
Payments β the report shows charges only, not payments received. For payment data, use the Collections Report.
Insurance vs. patient responsibility split β the report shows the total charge amount, not how it is divided between patient and insurance.
π‘ Common Use Cases
Category-level revenue review β Run without a category filter, sort by Category, and export as CSV to see a full breakdown of charges across all service types for the period
Provider + category analysis β Filter to a specific billing provider and category to see how much that provider billed for a specific type of service
Comparing service type volumes β Use the category sort to quickly see which service types generated the most charges in a period
Category-specific patient lists β Select a category and export to CSV to get a list of all patients who received services in that category during the date range
Multi-category reporting β Select multiple categories to see transactions across several service types in a single report run rather than running separate reports per category
β Common Questions
What is the difference between this report and By Service / Inventory Item? By Service / Inventory Item lets you filter to specific services or inventory items by name and shows transactions at that individual item level. Services by Category filters and organizes by the broader category bucket β useful when you want to see all charges for a type of service rather than a specific service name. Services by Category also adds a Category sort option not available in By Service / Inventory Item.
What is the difference between this report and the Sales Report? The Sales Report shows aggregate totals by service name across all patients. This report shows individual patient-level transactions and lets you filter and sort by category. Use the Sales Report for quick totals and this report for patient-level detail.
What if a service is assigned to the wrong category? The report will show that service under whatever category it was assigned in your service settings. If transactions are appearing in the wrong category, the service's category assignment will need to be corrected in Settings. This report cannot override how categories are assigned.
Can I see inventory items in this report? No. This report covers services only. Inventory items have their own category-level report β Inventory by Category β also found under Sales Reports in All Reports Beta.
Why don't my totals match the Sales Report? This report and the Sales Report both pull from ledger charge data and should reflect the same gross billed amounts for services. If there is a discrepancy, confirm that the date ranges match exactly and that the same filters are applied. Note that this report can be filtered to specific categories or providers, which would produce a lower total than the unfiltered Sales Report.
Can I run this for multiple categories at once? Yes β the Service Category filter accepts multiple selections. Select as many categories as you need and the report will return transactions for all of them.
β Key Takeaways
Services by Category shows patient-level service charge transactions organized by service category β it is the category-level equivalent of By Service / Inventory Item.
It lives under Sales Reports in All Reports Beta, not under Daily Reports or Find Patients.
The date filter keys off the ledger charge date β labeled "Charged between" in the report.
The Service Category and Billing Provider filters are both optional β leave them blank to see all service transactions, or use them to narrow results.
A unique Category sort option is available β useful for grouping all transactions by service type when running without a category filter.
The report shows default billed amounts only β inline write-offs are not reflected.
Service categories are fixed and assigned at the service level β if a service appears under the wrong category, the category assignment needs to be corrected in service settings.
This report covers services only β use Inventory by Category for inventory item transactions.
Export as CSV for detailed analysis, multi-provider comparisons, or combining with Write-Offs Report data.
π Conclusion
Services by Category is most useful when you want to understand charge activity at the service type level rather than at the individual service or item level. The category filter and the unique Category sort make it easy to slice your transaction data by the type of care being delivered. Keep in mind that the categories in this report are driven by how services are set up in ChiroHD β if transactions are appearing in the wrong bucket, the fix is in service settings, not in the report itself. For inventory item transactions, the companion report is Inventory by Category.
